Videoconferencing Gets Personal With Fundawear: Remotely Controlled Haptic Underwear

Durex Australia has released videos associated to an experimental product they are calling "Fundawear". Fundawear allows the remote sensation of touch through wearable undergarments via use of a mobile application. Unlike other wearable touch undergarments these appear to have had extra effort to ensure the least intrusive hardware within the garment. They have worked to use the smallest battery packs and vibrating sensors similar to those used in mobile phones.

We look at this as another incremental improvement to creating a sense of "presence" from afar and as a peripheral for videoconferencing (although the system can be used without a videoconference as well) . On a serious note, the fact that a consumer product like this exists shows how far we have come in the development of cost-effective, remotely controlled haptics.

This is not the first solution allowing people to evoke remote touch to overcome long distance relationships. Previous examples of implementation type of this technology include:

A user on the popular social media site Reddit asks a great question: "if a hacker gets into a woman's underwear software via internet would it be considered the first virtual sexual assault?".

While the original concept of Fundawear being designed for distant lovers, we could very easily see this type of technology applied to various adult businesses on the seedier side of the web.

With plenty of time to finish the product development by Christmas of 2013, this could be a special gift for a distant loved one.
