Comcast Takes Next Step Re: Video Conferencing Plans

July 28, 2011 | William Zimmerman

Comcast soon will take delivery of a custom-developed telepresence adapter built by Technicolor and aimed at providing high-definition video conferencing (calling) through TV sets.

Comcast plans to conduct market trials later this year.

Technicolor says its new gear will enable the operator to deliver an interactive video-calling experience to its subscribers using existing set-top boxes and TV sets as well as wireless LANs. The adapter includes HDMI input and output, Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi, RF4CE control, external USB and SD card slots, and an integrated external camera and microphone.

According to Steve Reynolds, senior vice president/Home Networking at Comcast, "As we were planning to create an HD video-conferencing service offering for our subscribers, we engaged Technicolor to design and develop the adapter based on their successful track record delivering custom-built solutions, and their ability to develop innovative products in a cost-effective, timely and seamless manner."
