MASERGY Intelligent Transport with Video QoS

As a leading independent telecommunications carrier founded to deliver native IP/MPLS network service, MASERGY (Telepresence Options Company Profile)  has developed as a customer's single point of contact for delivering sophisticated service solutions. MASERGY has consistently won awards and accolades for operational excellence and service innovation: 2010 Network Computing Finalist, Managed Service Provider of the Year; Global Telecom Business Innovations Award 2009 for its Advanced Video Services; and, World Communications Awards 2009 Finalist Best Global Operator being three recent wins recognizing MASERGY services.

MASERGY Intelligent Transport with Video Quality of Service (Click to Expand)

The MASERGY Intelligent Transport with Video Quality of Service is, as the name suggests particularly optimized for video communications applications. It incorporates specific packet delivery guarantees for completeness and sequence, jitter and failover to deliver the world's best-performing video and telepresence experience. That's why the leading Video Managed Service Providers look to MASERGY as their default wide area network service provider.

One of the unique features of MASERGY's Intelligent Transport services it that clients can put multiple transport services on the same circuit. For example, customers can choose to run video across a Layer 2 VPLS service, a Layer 3 Private IP service, or both. The MASERGY network automatically prioritizes video traffic across these circuits for superior video performance, including the 100% packet delivery. Clients also can include a Public IP option for connectivity outside the private corporate network. The service will dynamically allocate bandwidth between these services based on the highest priority so that video will always get bandwidth before other applications that are more latency and jitter tolerant. There is no additional cost for adding multiple transport services (VLANs) on the MASERGY circuit.

One of the most important requirements affecting the user experience is the need for crystal clear video. Users of immersive telepresence and HD video are particularly intolerant of packets that are lost in transit or packets with widely variable delay. The video codec will not be able to process the image in the steady state it was engineered to process, leading to seemingly random video artifacts on the screen, also known as 'visual noise', or in the case of the audio stream, introduces pops and garbled speech.

Despite the best efforts of codec manufacturers, through their implementation of a range of technologies such as Forward Error Correction and Packet Loss Compensation to overcome or minimize missing packets, the quality of the network service is among the most significant factors defining the visual experience for users.

Published Service Level Agreement

MASERGY guarantees, through its published Service Level Agreement specific performance commitments with economic consequences for non-performance. This gives customers confidence that the MASERGY network and network operations professionals are properly focused on their commitment for delivering packets in sequence, without loss, with minimal variability and very little delay.

Key features of the Intelligent Transport with Video QoS service include:

  • 100% video packet delivery
  • Guaranteed in-sequence
  • Less than 1 ms maximum latency variation ("jitter")
  • Less than 1 second fast failover for network recovery

These features are the key network metric in assuring a quality user telepresence and video conferencing experience, but MASERGY goes further. The company also commits to an industry-leading installation guarantee where new circuits are installed, depending on region and type of service, in as little as 35 days for a T1 in the continental USA, or as much as 65 days for an E1 in Europe or Asia-Pacific. The installation of other higher speed connections such as Ethernet, OC/STM or services outside USA, Europe or Asia-Pacific are defined at time of contract. The remedy on non-compliance is forfeiture of installation fee, so MASERGY and its network of access service partners are properly motivated to deliver connectivity on a reliable basis. This further makes MASERGY an unusual telecom provider and more importantly, a reliable service partner.

Delivering high availability is also a corporate passion for MASERGY. Using the metric from the equation:

                                              Availability = A/M * 100%

 where A = available minutes in a month and M = total minutes in a month, MASERGY has set particularly demanding performance commitments of 99.999% availability in the lower 48 states of the US and in Europe. MASERGY offers slightly lower commitments of 99.9% availability in Asia-Pacific and 99.75% in Africa and South America.

The MASERGY Intelligent Transport with Video Quality of Service sets the standard for fewest network defects and therefore maximizes the quality of experience available to telepresence and video conferencing users.
