Oculus buys Surreal Vision for telepresence technology
Teleportation may still be the stuff of "Star Trek," but with a new acquisition, Oculus VR may be one step closer to making telepresence a reality.
The Irvine, Calif., company has bought Surreal Vision, a London-based firm that focuses on real-time 3-D scene reconstruction -- in other words, programming "computer vision" to generate accurate representations of the real world inside the virtual world. Such technology will allow users to move around in the real world and interact with real-world objects while wearing an Oculus headset.
As the Surreal Vision founders described in Oculus' announcement, their research will lead to virtual and augmented reality systems that "will open the door to true telepresence, where people can visit anyone, anywhere."
