Seniors meet technology face-to-face
Sam Steiner has the ability to change people's lives with a few simple keystrokes.
Although Steiner may look like a typical 16-year-old high school kid, he's found himself a distinct purpose. Over the past two years, the sophomore at Saint Andrew's School inBoca Ratonhas brought technology and seniors together.
It began when Steiner's grandmother entered a rehabilitation center two years ago. He was quick to notice some of the residents appeared "lonely" and his thoughts immediately turned to his computer and how it could help them connect with their families. During his subsequent visits he brought his iPad, skills, compassion and patience.
Steiner volunteers almost every Sunday at several senior living facilities in theBoca RatonandDelray Beacharea. He works with residents, one-on-one, helping them connect with family members through email and Skype. Skype allows users to communicate through voice and video via a computer and camera.
"Sam connects our residents with their families in a way they never have before," said Jennifer Stevens, health center administrator at Harbour's Edge Senior Living Community inDelray Beach. "There are a lot of negative things said about nursing homes and this is something positive."
