New IDC MarketScape Provides a Vendor Assessment of the Worldwide Immersive Telepresence Equipment Market for 2012-2013

December 17, 2012 | Telepresence Options

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., December 12, 2012 - International Data Corporation (IDC) has published a new vendor and market analysis profiling the leading providers in the worldwide immersive telepresence equipment market. The report, IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Immersive Telepresence Equipment 2012-2013 Vendor Analysis (Doc #238292), utilizes a rigorous scoring methodology that produces a graphical assessment of each vendor's current market capabilities and strategies for competing in the future. IDC placed the two dominant immersive telepresence vendors - Cisco and Polycom - in the Leaders category for 2012-2013, with four others recognized as Major Players, including Huawei, Teliris, Radvision, and Vidyo.

"The worldwide immersive telepresence equipment market has been experiencing more downs than ups lately -- from several years of robust revenue growth prior to 2011, to revenue declines in 2011 and in the first three quarters of 2012 for some of the vendors," said Rich Costello, senior analyst, Enterprise Communications Infrastructure at IDC. "As a result, IDC foresees a scenario where mostly mid-to-large size companies maintain, but deploy to a lesser degree, new immersive telepresence solutions in central locations for specific high-end use cases, while also supplementing collaboration strategies with lower-cost, and/or no-cost, video alternatives that can support desktop, distributed, and mobile workers."

The study discusses both quantitative and qualitative characteristics that explain a vendor's success in the marketplace and helps anticipate its ascendancy. As the first IDC MarketScape for the worldwide immersive telepresence market, the study examines key criteria that contribute to a successful enterprise telepresence solution, such as vendors who can clearly demonstrate a robust product portfolio, including the ability to support telepresence endpoints in collaborative applications that can help truly transform how organizations conduct business today.

Covering a variety of vendors participating in the immersive telepresence market, this evaluation is based on a comprehensive framework and set of parameters that assess vendors relative to one another and to those factors expected to be most conducive to success in this market, for both the short and the long term. The nine vendors included in this analysis are Cisco, Digital Video Enterprise (DVE), Huawei, LifeSize, Magor, Polycom, Radvision, Teliris and Vidyo. In addition to the two vendors identified as Leaders (Cisco and Polycom), and four vendors named as Major Players (Huawei, Teliris, Radvision and Vidyo), three vendors were named as Contenders (LifeSize, Magor and DVE).

Organizations considering deploying immersive telepresence solutions need to take more of a strategic look at how implementing this technology will impact the current networking infrastructure, as well as integrate into their environment and business-critical applications now and in the future. "IDC MarketScape Leaders and Major Players are well positioned to seamlessly meet the needs of enterprise users in both the near and long-term, while contenders can address some specific telepresence usage requirements," Costello added.
