Microsoft's Telepresence Prototype Using Wedge Optics

The Applied Science Group at Microsoft Research continues to unveil additional components of their telepresence and visual collaboration portfolio. A couple weeks ago the group unveiled a number of new technologies focused on telepresence and Microsoft's internal goal of a "Magic Window" a large format telepresence environment with augmented reality.
This week the group has released a new video showing off a prototype that combines steropsis, a view dependent rendered image, and focal accommodation.
The prototype combines a 3D display that combines an OLED display with Microsoft's wedge optic system which looks through the screen. Head tracking is being accomplished using a visible Microsoft depth-sensing Kinect camera. The system displays a view of the remote scene custom tailored to the position of the user's head relative to the "magic window/screen". The component that makes this possible is a motorized camera rig on the remote side that is constantly adjusting the perspective of two cameras positioned as remote eyes tracking the user's head movement. The final result: A 3D stereopsis image without the use of 3D glasses. The future is so bright you might not need shades!
