From Stockbridge to Florida: Students pilot robot in Atlantic Ocean
January 25, 2012 | Hogan Keyser
From their classroom, they operated a commercial-grade robot 35 feet beneath the Atlantic Ocean at the Marine Lab. It was a "telepresence demonstration" two months prior to a working trip to Palau.
A leader at Marine Lab assessed the piloting work, done over the Internet, as "very good to excellent."
"It's similar to how they fly the drones," said Bob Richards, teacher and coach of the highly accomplished robotics team at Stockbridge High School.
Richards said the students had less than a quarter-second lag time in video communications from the robot. They did basic piloting tests and happened to see a jelly fish, barracuda and several other fish through the robot's camera.
