Ericsson, university, Mainconcept start CoVR R&D project

January 4, 2012 via TelecomPaper.com -- Ericsson, German technical university RWTH Aachen and digital media group Rovi's subsidiary MainConcept have started with their joint research and development project Connected Visual Reality (CoVR). The project has as goal to improve the usability of online audiovisual communication services preparing them for the mass market. The project receives EUR 1.1 million in funds from the EFRE co-financed operation programs for NRW Ziel 2, funded by the European Union and the innovation ministry of North Rhine Westphalia, after winning the HighTech NRW competition. The project will focus on improving video conferencing and telepresence products and services including interoperability between different networks. Ericsson Eurolab will manage the project with RWTH Aachen's information devices and data processing institute and information technology institute participating as well, while MainConcept offers its knowledge about video and audio codecs.
