Avaya to add 135 jobs in RTP
November 29, 2011 | Hogan Keyser
Technology company Avaya, which two years ago acquired Nortel's Enterprise Solutions unit for $933 million, will add 135 high-paying jobs over four years in RTP. As part of the expansion announced Monday, New Jersey-based Avaya stands to receive nearly $1.7 million in state incentives if it creates the positions.
Avaya, which makes advanced phone systems for businesses and governments, currently employs 304 in North Carolina, including 193 in RTP. The 135 jobs to be added between 2012 and 2015 will pay an average wage of $87,704. The Durham County average is $61,256.
Avaya, with 18,000 employees globally, is expanding the former Nortel facility with two North American hubs: a unit to oversee Avaya's supplies and orders, and a center for demonstrating two-way video communications products. The privately-held company will bring in 15 employees from other locations, but most of the hires will be local, and interviews are set to get under way this week.
Avaya had considered other sites - in Canada, Colorado and New Jersey for the expansion - a condition for qualifying for the state incentives.
