Vidyo Raises $22.5MM Series D - Total Investment Now $97MM

Vidyo's Panorama Supports up to 20 Simultaneous Screens of Interactive HD Video

Today telepresence and visual collaboration provider Vidyo announced a $22.5 million Series D round of financing led by QuestMark Partners, with participation from existing investors Four River Group, Menlo Ventures, Rho Ventures, and Star Ventures. Since being founded in 2005, the company has raised a total of $97 million in venture capital.

Vidyo has pioneered the use of Scalable Video Coding (SVC) in telepresence and videoconferencing which splits a high-definition video stream into multiple streams that perform better over best-effort networks like the Internet. When the video stream runs into congestion, the codec can drop one or more "layers," which might scale back resolution or frame rate but will otherwise maintain fluid video and, in the process, the ongoing sense of immersion.

Vidyo's SVC-based software codec runs on devices ranging from telepresence environments to iPads to smartphones on best-effort networks like the Internet.

"Vidyo is the only company that offers a telepresence solution that extends from an immersive room, to desktops and iPads or Android mobile devices, on a single infrastructure," said Ofer Shapiro, CEO and co-founder of Vidyo in a statement.  "Vidyo is fortunate to have outstanding investors who understand the architectural shift occurring in the market today and customers who will no longer pay the excessive cost of traditional telepresence when they can truly have more for less."

The company has been on a tear recently, releasing innovative new products like VidyoPanorma which can support up to 20 screens of interactive HD video simultaneously and can be engineered into a variety of multi-screen formats for telepresence environments, boardrooms, conference rooms, and environments.  The company made news last month when it won a major deal to upgrade the capabilities of the Ontario Telemedicine Network, one of the world's largest telehealth networks.  Just yesterday telepresence and videoconferencing managed service provider BCS Global announced that it had selected Vidyo as the technology platform for it's iView cloud-based managed desktop video service.

The funding comes in support of an aggressive expansion that has seen the company's headcount double from 100 to 200 employees in the past year including the addition of heavy hitters like Ashish Gupta, who came on-board from Microsoft as CMO and Senior Vice President for Business Development, and Jim Fairweather, the former Vice President of Sales at HP's Visual Collaboration Unit who now holds the title of VP of Worldwide Channels at Vidyo, and Mark Reid, with strong pedigree from HP and Polycom, who took the role of Senior Director of Engineering.
