Building a Global Telepresence Community
April 15, 2011 | Howard Lichtman
A new partnership between Orange Business Services and TATA Communications was recently introduced with the goal of allowing customers from both companies to seamlessly conduct telepresence meetings on each others' network. This effectively creates a link between TATA Communications' Global Meeting Exchange and Orange's Telepresence Community - each company's respective managed Telepresence network.
Orange's Telepresence Community is a managed network that currently allows subscribers who have invested in immersive video technology to hold telepresence meetings with customers, suppliers, etc that are connected to Orange's global MPLS platform or a partner carrier's network; this in addition to subscribers having telepresence meetings within the confines of their own enterprise. TATA's Global Meeting Exchange, on the other hand, is a managed network that has the world's largest network of telepresence rooms available to the public with approximately 33 public rooms in 31 major cities spanning 17 countries.
This new interoperability agreement with TATA Communications gives Orange's Telepresence Community subscribers the ability to conduct Telepresence meetings with users of the TATA Communications Global Meeting Exchange, and vice versa. As this is a reciprocal interoperability agreement, Orange customers have access to Tata's Public Telepresence rooms and Tata's Global Meeting Exchange users have access to Orange's Telepresence Community Network.
And with Tata's largest global network of public Telepresence Rooms coupled with the ability to have telepresence exchanges with customers, partners, and suppliers on Orange's network, both companies stand to improve their product offerings significantly. With the sales of Telepresence rooms up 130 percent over the past 12 months alone, and the ever expanding role for telepresence in business, telepresence as a managed service with the physical room component as part of the overall package with the tremendously sized network that comprises both companies' managed telepresence networks, customers will be essentially be getting more bang-for-their-buck.
Orange expects to announce another 5 interconnects with other networks with hopes of enlarging the Telepresence Community globally. Currently, Telepresence Community - Inter Carrier only supports customers using Cisco Systems TelePresence equipment, but plans to expand its support to vendors of other TelePresence systems soon.
