IMTC Announced Today That It Has Completed the Transfer of Telepresence Interoperability Protocol (TIP) for Immediate Availability and Will Host Ongoing Development

SAN RAMON, CA, Sep 28, 2010 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX News Network) --
International Multimedia Telecommunications Consortium (IMTC) today announced that it has completed the transfer of Telepresence Interoperability Protocol (TIP) from Cisco Systems Inc and has established a TIP Activity Group.

TIP is now available from IMTC under a royalty-free license, making it easier to achieve multi-screen interoperability between Telepresence equipment providers. The protocol documentation and license is now available for download at IMTC TIP developer web page. IMTC has taken ownership of further development of TIP protocol and will include TIP testing in IMTC SuperOp! events. To coordinate those activities, IMTC has established a new TIP Activity Group. Membership of this Activity Group is open to all IMTC members.

"This announcement marks an important milestone in the advancement of the video industry toward enabling the full interoperability that customers are asking for," said Alan Benway, Executive Director, Product Marketing Management at AT&T. "We look forward to working closely with the IMTC to advance the technology to meet customer needs."

The TIP Library open source project was also transferred to IMTC, software which can be used to help speed the integration of TIP into your product or system. The TIP Library is offered under the Apache 2.0 open source license and IMTC encourages programmers to get involved in making improvements or upgrades to code at Sourceforge.

The TIP (Version 6 and Version 7) specifications are also available via IMTC now. These protocol specifications describe how to multiplex multiple screens, multiple audio streams, and an auxiliary-data screen into respective Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP) flows using a multiplexing technique. More information on TIP and free download is available at: http://www.imtc.org/tip/
