Net Insight, TeliaSonera International Carrier and DVE deliver the future of telepresence live at IBC 2008

September 12, 2008 | Chris Payatagool

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Net Insight, TeliaSonera International Carrier and DVE will showcase a first-of-its-kind, live demonstration of holographic-appearing telepresence streamed over TeliaSonera International Carrier's switched media network at IBC 2008, 12-16, Sept. 2008.

The leading-edge demonstration is yet another example of how the Net Insight Nimbra platform transports and enables the most advanced video applications. The demonstration will show a remote-based presenter projected as a holographic-appearing image behind a DVE podium. The DVE screen creates the appearance that a person is standing at a podium, the final effect is simulated reality, permitting video images of people to appear to be positioned in the actual room. The podium on display at the show, is one of many next-generation telepresence solutions from DVE. TeliaSonera International Carrier will transmit the data stream over its switched European media network from Stockholm to the IBC show floor in Amsterdam using Net Insight's high-capacity Nimbra switches.

Telepresence is poised to transform global communication as gas prices and global warming are pushing service providers to introduce differentiated videoconferencing offerings. With the capability to stream higher packet loads required by high-end, real-time collaborative video, broadcast and telecom network operators now have the opportunity to deliver telepresence as an extended service, generating additional revenue opportunities.

"IBC is the global stage for next generation video services, products and new applications designed to enhance services and revenue opportunities for attending network owners," said Fredrik Trägårdh, CEO of Net Insight. "The combination of Net Insight's optical network transport technology, TeliaSonera International Carrier's highly reliable and secure media network and DVE's podium demonstrate the experience and the business opportunity available through telepresence."

High-end, real-time collaborative video requires significantly more packets and bandwidth than traditional videoconferencing from years ago. Latency wreaks havoc on this type of video distribution, disrupting the goal of total immersion during telepresence applications. To deliver true next generation telepresence and maximize revenue opportunities network flexibility, maximum bandwidth utilization and 100 percent QoS over private and public networks must be achieved.

"We aim to provide the best media experience possible to our customers and because of that, become the provider of choice to the media industry," said Jonathan Wood Head of Media Services, TeliaSonera International Carrier. "Our wholly owned fiber-based media network is specifically designed to transport real-time critical media content securely, reliably, and cost effectively and is perfectly suited for these types of applications."

"Without the capability that Net Insight integrates into our solution, holographic-appearing telepresence would not be easily achieved," said Steve McNelley, co-founder and CEO of DVE. "Video quality has come a long way. With video streamed to our podiums without jitter, latency or delay, we have exceeded expectations of telepresence opportunities and applications."
