Palm, Desert, CA and Hackensack, NJ January 28, 2008 -- Vidyo, Inc., the first company to release technology and products built upon the recently approved H.264/SVC video compression standard, today announced that Cisco is one of the first companies to license VidyoTechnology. Cisco intends to integrate this new technology into Cisco Unified Communications solutions to enhance Cisco's ability to provide users with high quality desktop video experiences across a broad range of network environments. Vidyo will launch and present its breakthrough VidyoConferencing products at the three day DEMO 08 conference that starts today in Palm Desert, CA. The Importance of H.264/SVC (Scalable Video Coding)
In November of 2007, a new video compression standard that enhances the H.264/AVC standard was ratified jointly by the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and International Standards Organization (ISO) MPEG. Formally known as H.264 annex G, it features Scalable Video Coding, a technique that enables a video stream to be broken into multiple resolutions, quality levels and bit rates. The different bit-stream components make it possible for applications to dynamically adapt to varying network conditions such as packet loss, fluctuating network bandwidth, and network delay. Similarly, the use of multiple bit?stream components helps enable solutions to deliver an optimal experience across different endpoints. As such, H.264/SVC is well suited for point to point and multipoint video applications between organizations and desktop video applications where the bandwidth cannot be guaranteed.

"We believe VidyoTechnology will enable a new wave of video communications," said Ofer Shapiro, CEO of Vidyo. "By consistently delivering high quality video conferencing over unmanaged networks, VidyoTechnology will help deliver video solutions for today's global and mobile workplace. We're excited to be working with Cisco to bring this next generation video technology to their customers."

"Video is a critical component of Cisco's Unified Communications and collaboration environment because it provides a rich experience that helps speed decision making and improve the way information is shared across organizations, with customers and among partners," said Rick McConnell, vice president, Cisco's Unified Communications Business Unit. "Integrating VidyoTechnology into our existing collaborative solutions will enable us to deliver compelling desktop video experiences across a broader range of workspaces and network environments."

VidyoTechnology, the first commercial implementation based on H.264/SVC, offers solution providers the ability to integrate video capabilities that deliver high quality experiences across general purpose IP networks. VidyoTechnology offers these significant advantages:

  • Highly resilient to packet loss - capable of sustaining high?quality video under high-loss network conditions
  • Low-delay desktop video conferencing (less than 30 ms)
  • Scalable to thousands of participants
  • Supports video resolutions from sub-QCIF to high definition (HD) while providing the best individual quality for each participant in a conference
  • Software?only implementation - available for PC, Mac, Linux
