Samsung: Next HDTV to Offer 8x Better Resolution

December 18, 2007 | John Serrao
SamsungArticle3MW.gifWashington, D.C. (December 14, 2007) -- A top Samsung executive says the next wave of High-Definition TVs will offer eight times the picture resolution.

That's according to an article by The New York Times.

Scott Birnbaum, a Samsung vice president for LCD sales, says his company expects to produce displays that offer a picture resolution of 4,000 x 2,000 pixels.

Current 1080p HDTVs now deliver a picture resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels.

"The next wave of resolution will be 8 times the resolution of HD," Birnbaum told the newspaper.

However, before you run to the store, the executive added that Samsung hasn't even started building a plant to produce the new model. (Additionally, TV programmers now are not even broadcasting in 1080p, much less 8x beyond that.)

But Birnbaum says the company is discussing the super-resolution set with customers.

"We're not trying to force the market to move," he said. "But sometimes technology surprises you and things pull in much quicker than you expect."

Birnbaum also told The Times that worldwide demand for LCD sets are now outpacing supply, which is keeping profits up.

Samsung is now the world's leading seller of LCD TVs.
