October 29, 2007 | Chris Payatagool
john_chambers.jpgBANGALORE: John Chambers, chairman & CEO of Cisco Systems, will be in India on October 30 and 31 to inaugurate the company's new campus in the city. In December 2006, Chambers had named India as the site for Cisco's globalisation centre and Wim Elfrink was appointed the chief globalisation officer. The company also intends to move 20% of its top executives to India in the coming two-three years. In an email interview prior to his visit, Chambers told Dhanya Krishnakumar that India and China remain core to Cisco's growth strategy.

It is said that TelePresence has changed the way you do business. How do you see that catching on in emerging markets?

The life-like experience TelePresence enables has the potential to transform business and is beginning to do so already. At Cisco, we now have over 130 TelePresence systems deployed around the world. We have conducted almost 29,000 meetings over TelePresence; almost 6,000 of which were between people who avoided travel by instead using TelePresence. Since the launch of TelePresence in India in December 2006, we have been working closely with several of the top companies here to deploy TelePresence systems. In addition to the valuable business benefits, the reduction of travel due to TelePresence usage can help a company significantly reduce its environmental impact. For example, in this past year alone, Cisco has reduced its carbon emissions from air travel by 10%.
